Women & practical skills

Opening technical skills to more women.

SkillsPark includes women in practical computer-hardware training so technical skills are not treated as belonging to only one group. Hands-on learning gives participants the opportunity to understand computer components, practise diagnosis and build confidence working directly with hardware.

Practical capability can create more ways for people to solve problems in their communities and develop independent work opportunities.

YOUTH SKILLS & OPPORTUNITY

Helping young people turn potential into practical capability.

SkillsPark works with young women and men to build practical digital and technical skills that can support self-development, employability, entrepreneurship and income-generating work. The wider goal is to strengthen confidence, discipline, problem-solving and a productive mindset so young people are better equipped to create opportunities for themselves and contribute positively to their communities.

OPEN PRACTICAL LEARNING

Making technical knowledge easier to access.

SkillsPark has used free practical workshops to introduce community members to foundational technology concepts. In an introductory computer-maintenance session, participants explored basic hardware components and developed a clearer understanding of how computers work, creating a starting point for deeper technical learning.

TEAMWORK & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Learning to build with other people.

SkillsPark encourages learners to see technology as something they can build with other people, not only study individually. Some learners have come together as a team around their own platform or venture idea, combining different strengths and learning how collaboration, responsibility and shared thinking shape real projects.

Teamwork develops another layer of practical capability: communicating ideas, dividing responsibility, solving problems together and learning how individual skills contribute to a larger goal.

Community exchange

Ideas grow through exchange.

Tech community

A place for builders to exchange ideas.

SkillsPark welcomes startup founders, technology professionals and other builders to exchange ideas, discuss challenges and explore ways to learn or work together.

Sharing what we are building, what we have learned and where we need a different perspective helps ideas develop. These conversations also help SkillsPark question its own thinking and share practical knowledge from our work, research and experimentation.

Community & collaboration

Different skills. A shared belief in practical opportunity.

SkillsPark welcomed Fatima Auwal Yakasai, Founder of Aftee Vocational Center, for a visit and an exchange of experience. Her work brings vocational training to learners through catering, decoration, tailoring, skincare and other practical skills. Over the years, she has trained hundreds of learners, including people supported through scholarships and other opportunities to access training.

For SkillsPark founder Muhammad-Dayyib Idris, the conversation was also personal:

Fatima is an old friend and someone I regard as an elder sister. I respect her commitment to helping people develop practical skills. Our journeys began with many of the same realities: limited resources, limited technical knowledge and a strong desire to keep learning and building something useful for our communities. Years later, we are both still building.

Exploring what technology could support.

The visit created space to discuss the challenges of running practical training organisations and consider how technology could complement vocational skills. We explored possibilities around digital learning resources, programme organisation, communication and visibility.

These conversations are part of what being a hub means to SkillsPark: a place for people doing useful work to share experience, question ideas and explore where their strengths may complement one another.

Different skills can serve different needs. When people who care about practical opportunity exchange ideas, both sides can leave with a fresh perspective.
